DOT Project 0038-0085 Webpage
Welcome to the webpage for Project 0038-0085, Replacement of Bridge No. 04645, Ashford Road over Bigelow Brook, in the Town of Eastford.
A virtual public informational meeting for the project will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide the community an opportunity to learn about the proposed project and allow an open discussion of any views and comments concerning the proposed improvements. A Q&A session will immediately follow the presentation.
The purpose of the project is to replace Bridge No. 04645, which carries Ashford Road over Bigelow Brook. The existing 27.7’ long bridge, originally built in 1937, is being replaced since it has a substandard roadway width, poor substructure condition, is scour critical and hydraulically inadequate, and has reached the end of its service life. The proposed 58.5’ long structure will be comprised of prestressed concrete deck units with a cast-in-place topping slab supported by concrete abutments and flared wingwalls with foundations bearing on bedrock and support a 24’ wide roadway meeting standards. The proposed structure with a 52’ wide hydraulic opening and the roadway raised by 1’ will eliminate roadway overtopping and provide under-clearance during the 100-year design storm resulting in improved hydraulic adequacy. The project includes installation of new bridge and approach rail system meeting current safety standards and elimination of scour critical condition. Approximately 385’ of roadway reconstruction is proposed including roadway drainage improvements.
Right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed project includes partial permanent takes (4 properties), drainage right-of-way (3 properties), permanent slope easements (4 properties), temporary construction easement (1 property), along with rights to install gravel pull-offs, relocate trail, remove and reset stone wall, install sediment control system, and reconstruct driveway.
Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $4,410,000. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.
