New Locomotives - Dual Mode & MP-20
Connecticut has approved in December 2005, a $25 million dollar bond request to purchase 13 new locomotives for use on the New Haven and Branch Service Lines and in rail yard work. Six Dual Mode (diesel & 3rd rail electric) and Seven MP-20 diesel locomotive engines will be built in the coming years.
The state has submitted a request for proposal to build these locomotives in January, 2006. Bids are due to ConnDOT by July 2006.
The state will be looking to build the cleanest locomotives available to run on ultra-low sulfur fuel. These new locomotives will replace current fleet that is over 40 + years old. The total costs will be funded by state and federal dollars.
