The Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center

The Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center at the Connecticut Veterans Affairs is a Skilled Nursing Facility licensed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health. The Levitow Healthcare Center takes pride in being certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), achieving their highest 5-star rating. This exceptional distinction indicates the Levitow Healthcare Center is considered much above average in quality by CMS. The Levitow Healthcare Center is also certified annually as a State Veterans Home by the Federal Veterans Administration.

At the Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center, we care for Veteran Patients with acute and chronic conditions that need daily medical management. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiac disease
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Dementia
  • Stroke 
  • Diabetes
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neuromuscular diseases

Meet the Administrator

Laura Nelson
Laura Nelson joined the DVA in 2018 as the Administrator of the Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center.

Under her leadership the Healthcare Center successfully transitioned from a Chronic Disease Hospital to a Skilled Nursing Facility in March of 2020. Since that time, the facility has earned Medicare’s highest nursing home rating of 5 Stars. Laura has an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. She also earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Hartford.

Palliative care for Veterans in CT

Veterans Palliative Care utilizes comfort care, prioritizing relief from suffering and symptom management. This allows Veterans to maintain their daily activities and pursue what holds the most significance in their lives. The goal is to enhance Veterans' quality of life, encompassing mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Veterans receiving palliative care can also continue curative or illness-controlling treatments. This integrated approach can begin at diagnosis and continue throughout the course of their illness.

About Sgt. John L. Levitow

Sgt. John L. Levitow

Connecticut native Sgt. John Lee Levitow was a highly decorated Air Force airman and Medal of Honor recipient. He tirelessly advocated for veterans and inspired many. His courage and selflessness are his lasting legacy.
 
Born in Hartford, Sgt. Levitow was a lifelong resident of Glastonbury and Rocky Hill. He worked more than 22 years with both the U.S and Connecticut Veterans Affairs. He was the legislative liaison and director of planning for the Connecticut Veterans Affairs at the time of his death on November 8, 2000.
 
He joined the Air Force in 1966 and would become one of the most respected and famous airmen in U.S. history. Sgt. Levitow was a loadmaster on a mortar-attacked, AC-47 gunship (call sign Spooky 71). While flying a night combat mission over South Vietnam, he saved the lives of his eight crew members, even after being badly hurt. Sgt John L. Levitow received the Medal of Honor from President Richard M. Nixon on Armed Forces Day May 14, 1970.
