U.S. Army Sergeant Ari R. Cullers of Waterford died October 30, 2011 in Kandahar province Afghanistan due to injuries caused by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade.
He was born in New London on March 30, 1983 and enlisted in the Army after graduating from Waterford High School in 2001. He was assigned to 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y.
Cullers awards and commendations include the Bronze Star, posthumous; Purple Heart, posthumous; Army Commendation Medal 2, pending, posthumous; Army Achievement Medal 4; Army Good Conduct Medal 4; Army Good Conduct Medal 2; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star 3; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Meritorious Unit Commendation (Army) and the Overseas Service Bar 3.
He is survived by his mother, Robin E. Cornele; his stepfather, Tim Forsyth; brother, Jacob, and a large extended family.
