U.S. Army Specialist Philip C. S. Schiller, February 18, 1991 - April 11, 2012, was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
Schiller enlisted in the Army in 2009 and completed both Basic and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He went on to complete Military Occupational Specialty 11B, Infantryman, in 2010 and Combat Lifesavers Course in 2011. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan.
He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
Schiller is survived by his father, Erik, and other family.
