About the Licensing Unit

The Licensing Unit is responsible for ensuring that only competent and trustworthy persons are licensed to perform insurance services in Connecticut. This is performed by developing and maintaining up-to-date educational standards and examinations for all prospective licensees and issuing and renewing of licenses to qualified applicants.

Educational standards and examinations are developed and monitored by this Unit for all courses, study materials, and instructors used in conjunction with approved pre-license training programs required by Connecticut General Statutes. Courses are approved for insurance companies, educational institutions, insurance associations, insurance training schools and insurance publishing companies. Testing is conducted by a Third-Party Vendor.

The Unit determines the qualifications for all applicants applying for licenses, and also regularly reviews the qualifications for its individual and business entity licensees, in the following categories: Casualty Adjuster, Certified Insurance Consultant, Fraternal Agent, Life Settlement Broker, Life Settlement Registration, Motor Vehicle Physical Damage Appraiser, Portable Electronics, Premium Finance Company, Producer, Public Adjuster, Reinsurance Intermediary Broker and Manager, Rental Car Permit, Surplus Lines Broker.

In addition to ensuring that all the above resident and nonresident license classes continue to comply with Connecticut laws and regulations, the Unit also monitors Continuing Education compliance for resident individual Life, Health, Property, Casualty, and Personal Lines Producers.

The Unit also provides online resources for obtaining license information for both licensees and Consumers, in accordance with Connecticut's Freedom of Information Act.
