Get to know the Department of Social Services

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is Connecticut’s comprehensive health and human services agency. We envision a Connecticut where all are healthy, secure, and thriving. Our programs and services support this goal, serving about 1.2 million residents of all ages across Connecticut.

DSS has 1,700 dedicated staff led by Commissioner Andrea Barton Reeves. We work with our service partners to:

  • Provide federal and state aid, social services, support for residents, and more
  • Support the well-being of nearly 1 million residents through HUSKY Health healthcare coverage
  • Help nearly 390,000 residents afford food through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)

Report fraud

Report fraud

We’ve made it easy, safe, and secure to report fraud

DSS is strongly committed to identifying and eliminating fraud, so we’ve created easy, confidential ways to report it. Fraud can be committed by a client, provider, or vendor. There are two main types of fraud:

  • Client fraud: An intentional action that helps a client (or someone else) get public assistance benefits they aren’t entitled to.
  • Provider or vendor fraud: An intentional lie or misrepresentation that helps a provider or vendor get an unearned benefit (usually an excess payment).
