Upgrades to Passenger Parking At Various CTfastrak Stations In Central Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Transportation today announced upgraded passenger parking plans for various CTfastrak Bus Rapid Transit system stations in New Britain, Newington and West Hartford. Parking capacity along the CTfastrak corridor will be expanded by 142 percent in 2016 – for a total of 429 spaces versus 177 today.

CASE Releases Winter Highway Maintenance Study

A new study conducted by the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering concludes chloride-based deicing chemicals should be expected to be the standard for the foreseeable future and CTDOT should continue to use sodium chloride as the primary deicing chemical.

One Percent Rail Fare Increase Takes Effect January 1, 2016

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is reminding passengers that train fares on the New Haven Line and Shore Line East will increase one percent on January 1, 2016. Monthly tickets on sale for January will reflect the new fares.

CTDOT Commissioner Tours Facilities in Northeastern Connecticut

Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker today toured three recently completed CTDOT projects and facilities – a new bridge over the Willimantic River between Mansfield and Coventry, a new bus maintenance facility in Mansfield and the newly reopened Willington rest areas on I-84.

CTDOT to Test Unmanned Aerial Vehicle System (UAV) for Bridge Inspection

As part of the CTDOT's ongoing mission to improve and evaluate its operations and to assess the usefulness and functionality of new technologies, on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, the CTDOT will utilize an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to perform limited visual bridge inspection tasks on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

New Haven Commuter Rail Line Schedules to Change November 16

New timetables are coming to the New Haven commuter rail line on Monday, November 16, and normal service will resume on the Waterbury Branch, where passengers have been changing trains at a temporary transfer station at Devon. Waterbury Branch customers will resume changing trains in Bridgeport.

CTDOT: TIME-LAPSE VIDEO CAPTURES ACCELERATED BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION

Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Commissioner James Redeker today announced the official opening of the new Route 57 Bridge over the west branch of the Saugatuck River in Weston. Commissioner Redeker highlighted CTDOT’s use of a new bridge replacement method to accelerate construction of the project and reduce the cost of replacing the bridge.

CTfastrak Real-time Bus Information Available on Google Maps

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced today that real-time bus information for CTfastrak is now available on Google Maps. This information will also be available on other greater Hartford area buses as a statewide roll-out of real-time bus information technology is made available on CTtransit systems over the next year.

Charter Oak Greenway Trail Project Underway in Manchester

Construction of a new extension of the Charter Oak Greenway bicycle and pedestrian trail is underway in Manchester. State and local officials toured the site today as the Connecticut Department of Transportation released a five-year plan for additional trails across Connecticut – part of Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s 30-year, $100 billion transportation improvement program known as “Let’s Go CT.”

STAMFORD TRANSPORTATION CENTER PARKING GARAGE UPDATE

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today announced the closing of the pedestrian bridge and stairs connecting the original commuter parking garage to the Stamford Transportation Center (STC) in order to facilitate work to reopen part of the garage. Commuters are urged to budget more time to catch their trains. As portions of the improvements are completed, pedestrian access from the STC to the expanded garage, through the original garage, will be returned to service.

GOV. MALLOY ANNOUNCES ‘Q BRIDGE’ PROJECT, THE BIGGEST IN CTDOT HISTORY, COMPLETED AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the southbound side of the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge on I-95 in New Haven – informally known as the Q Bridge – is scheduled to open approximately eight months ahead of schedule. Construction of the main span bridge was completed in July 2015 on schedule and on budget. Four lanes of the new southbound bridge are scheduled to open to vehicles the week of September 28, providing much needed relief for tens of thousands of residents who face congestion in the corridor and enhancing the region’s overall economic competitiveness.

The CTDOT operates a multimodal public transportation network consisting of commuter rail and bus systems, as well as paratransit services, providing over 80 million rides annually. To ensure fairness and equity in the distribution of those services, the Department wishes to engage the public in a collaborative process to develop its public transportation equity policies. The purpose of developing these policies is to ensure that the Department identifies, mitigates and/or minimizes disproportionate negative impacts to minority or economically disadvantaged populations whenever there is a major service change proposal.

Ospreys Nesting on New Platform on Swing Bridge

State and local officials today toured the East Haddam swing bridge to see first-hand the pair of ospreys nesting on the new platform built for them by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), which owns and operates the 102-year-old bridge that opens and closes for marine traffic below on the Connecticut River. CTDOT Commissioner James P. Redeker also announced that the department has begun “tweeting” messages to interested citizens when the bridge opens and closes. GOV. MALLOY: REPLACEMENT OF NORWALK RAIL BRIDGE ON SCHEDULE

Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Commissioner James P. Redeker today announced that the design for a new Walk Railroad Bridge in Norwalk is progressing and remains on schedule. Prior to Governor Malloy’s administration, the bridge, which was first built in 1896, had gone decades without any plans for replacement despite its declining reliability. Now, as bridge designers have been developing plans for the replacement bridge and preparing the necessary permits, interim repairs to help ensure its functionality have been completed. Construction on an entirely new bridge is expected to begin in 2016 and be completed in 2020.

Ridership on the New Haven commuter rail line reached record highs in 2014, with some 39.6 million passenger trips – a 1.6 percent increase over 2013 – according to numbers released today by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, parent of Metro-North, the operator of the New Haven Line.

THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION URGES RESIDENTS TO AVOID I-91 SOUTH DURING RUSH HOUR

HARTFORD, CT – The Department of Transportation urges residents to take alternative routes home this afternoon and evening, following a tractor trailer rollover just before Exit 27 on I-91 South. In addition to the overturned transport, lumber stored within the vehicle has spilled onto the roadway. The Department of Transportation and the State Police are working as quickly as possible to clear the road for safe travel. However, significant delays are expected to continue into the evening rush hour. The DOT urges residents to take alternative roads home and avoid I-91 South – north of exit 27 – for the next several hours.

CT DOT Prepared for Weekend Winter Storm – Entire Fleet Ready for Deployment – Motorists Advised to Restrict Travel and Use Caution on Roadways

With a moderate statewide winter-weather event forecast for Saturday, the DOT has readied its fleet of plow trucks, materials and personnel to clear and salt state roadways. The DOT plow fleet of 632 trucks, stationed at roughly 50 garages around the state, is prepared for deployment as weather conditions evolve. Current forecasts indicate that the entire state fleet will be in use. If needed, the Department can add 200 private contractors to further compliment state plow crews.

Connecticut Department of Transportation to Hold Public Hearing on Bus Route Changes

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) will hold a public hearing in New Britain to gather public comment on changes to bus routes. The changes include an expansion of local and express bus service in the greater Hartford, New Britain, and Bristol service areas and addition of Express bus service between Hartford and Waterbury.

Gov. Malloy, Bond Commission Approve Design of Rail Stations on Hartford and New Haven Lines

Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced today that $5.75 million approved this morning by the State Bond Commission will be used to advance design plans and address environmental issues for new railroad stations on the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Line (NHHS) and the New Haven Line. The funding will be combined with another $4 million in previously approved funding.

GOV. MALLOY TOURS SITE OF THE NEW MERIDEN INTERMODAL CENTER

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today toured the Meriden train station on the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) rail corridor, which is the site of an ongoing transit-oriented development (TOD) project with a primary focus on stimulating the area within a half‐mile of the proposed new Meriden Intermodal Center. In his State of the State address on Wednesday, Governor Malloy outlined his long-term vision for investing in upgrading and modernizing Connecticut’s transportation infrastructure.
